Thursday 24th August
Early morning departure from Dublin with Aer Lingus. On arrival you will be met by our guide and transferred to the lovely 4-star Herodian Hotel (see below), near the Acropolis in Athens. Check-in early afternoon. The rest of the day is free to discover this magnificent city.
Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5th Century BC (the “Golden Age of Pericles”) – the culmination of Athens’ long, fascinating history – the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. Over the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments – a rare historical palimpsest. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in the two centuries since, it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm.
A large part of the town’s historic centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites (“archaeological park”), reconstructing – to a large degree – the ancient landscape.
Friday 25th August
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before setting off for a city sightseeing tour. This will take in all the major places of interest and will include a visit to the Acropolis and its Museum (entrance fees included) with English speaking guide.
Saturday 26th August
After breakfast, enjoy the morning at the hotel or do some last minute sightseeing. About noon, you will be collected by private transfer and taken to the port of Piraeus, where you will check-in for your Greek Islands cruise aboard Queen Victoria. Depart Piraeus early evening.
Sunday 27th August
Today you can rest, relax and use the time to get to know the ship. Explore the many bars, restaurants, activities and entertainment venues.
After a hearty breakfast, you can pick at elevenses before lunch. Afternoon tea will keep you going until the marvellous dinner is served. That will be just in time for the show, followed by the other entertainments to be found around the ship. If you are still hungry, there will always be a little something available somewhere on the ship.
Monday 28th August
Today you will make a most unusual visit. Today, it is Albania!
Sarandë is a coastal town in southern Albania. Seldom visited, it is situated on an open sea gulf of the Ionian Sea, about 14 km east of Corfu. The city is known for its blue deep waters of the Mediterranean. Near Sarandë are the remains of the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In recent years, Sarande has seen a steady increase in tourists, many of them coming by cruise ship. Visitors are attracted both by the natural beauty of Sarande and its archaeological attractions. Sarandë has a Greek minority and is considered one of the two centres of the Greek community in Albania.
Tuesday 29th August
Today you will be cruising south and into the Aegean Sea and the stunning Greek Islands. Again, you will have time to enjoy life on board. Maybe a spot of sunbathing by the pool?
Wednesday 30th August
Wander among the squares and fountains here in the island’s capital and largest city, or gaze out over the azure blue waters of the Cretan Sea, as you enjoy fresh seafood in a local taverna on the promenade. Most likely, you’ll seek out the immense reconstructed Minoan palace at Knossos, an incredible complex which houses a warren of rooms decorated with columns and frescoes.
Thursday 31st August
Expect a warm welcome in Rhodes, with its magnificent scenery and flawless beaches. Legend has it Rhodes was once blessed with sunshine and beauty by Apollo. With a rich medieval history there is plenty to explore at Rhodes, from the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, to the Grand Master’s Palace, famed for its superb mosaic floors.
Friday 1st September
A real vision of Greek island beauty, Mykonos is a sight to behold, with the cobalt blue Aegean waters that wash around its border onto golden sandy beaches. Inland, white sugar cube houses and red-roofed churches add to the picturesque appeal. Meander through the jumble of tiny streets, where bougainvillea, clematis and geraniums cascade from balconies. No wonder it was such a favourite of Aristotle.
Saturday 2nd September
Return to Piraeus early morning. After breakfast, take your private transfer from the ship direct to Athens Airport. Take an early afternoon flight home with Aer Lingus, arriving in Dublin mid-afternoon.
Herodian Hotel, Athens
Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, the Herodion Hotel offers elegantly decorated air-conditioned rooms.
